Twitter Book Club Weekend Update

September 20, 2009 22:26 by kelly

I hope everyone who wants to read along with our #twooks book club has had a chance to obtain a copy of The Thirteenth Tale (or is close to doing so!).  I have my copy, and was pleased to discover that it includes a “Readers Club Guide” in the back of the book; including a summary (which I have chosen NOT to read, in order that I don’t spoil any surprises), 14 discussion points, suggestions on how to enhance our reading club experience, and a question & answer session with the author!  As we get along in our reading, we may find these resources helpful. So far, I’ve managed to read one page. Yes, one.  But a good one it was!

In an effort to get us all “on the same page” I want to be sure we all know who is involved & reading, so we can all follow each other & get to know who is who!  Here’s who I know is reading with us so far, but I may be missing someone(s), so please tweet me or leave a comment to let me know you’re reading too! I don’t want to leave anyone out:

It seems like the standard book club routine is to read a chapter at a time, and then discuss. However, the “chapters” in this book appear to be relatively short (about 12 pages), so we may want to just set a page # where we’ll all agree to pause & discuss?   Or, would we appreciate a more free-form approach to reading & discussing:  just posting/tweeting our thoughts as we go along at our individual speeds?  We could post comments on this blog, or at another mutually agreed upon “book club” meeting place, or we could @ each other in twitter, or we could meet up at a certain time on twitter, or we could just post our thoughts whenever they come to mind by using the #twooks hashtag.  I’m up for anything, though, less scheduling is probably best, to keep this fun!

I know we all have very busy lives with children, work, school, family, and everything else.  I don’t want this to feel like an obligation in any way! My personal intention with this club is simply to get back into reading good books!  I’ve found in my life recently, I spend so much time reading online that reading books has taken a far backseat.  I’d like to change that, in as fun a way as possible!

So any suggestions as to how we’d like to move through the book & discuss what we’re reading as we go along are more than welcome!

I am excited to get back into reading! Welcome to #twooks!

Thanks for taking charge of organizing all this!  Here are my thoughts:
*I think @ing people will get crazy with the number of people we, so I say we keep our thoughts on twitter going with the #twooks hashtag but don't worry about @anyone.
*I can't do page numbers because I am reading on my kindle (it has locations instead of page numbers because of how you can change the text size), but I read the first chapter and it did seem very short.  What if we did 3-5 chapters a week?  Perhaps that is too short or too long, I don't know, that seems on the low end for me but I am an admittedly fast reader.  The two kids have been known to conspire against me too, so I wouldn't want to make it be too much.
*Are you all on goodreads.com?  It is set up as social networking around books, it may be a thought if we don't want to do it in the comments here we could make a group there.  Though perhaps we just want to keep it confined to twitter and see how we do at discussing a book in 140 character snippets?

Good points, about kindle not having page numbers (@whenfrogsrule is also reading this on kindle), and using #twooks over @ messages.

I'm perfectly happy to host the group here for now, and I do like the idea of confining our discussions to "twitterverse" - if only just for the uniqueness of it!  Smile

I like the idea of just tweeting as we go along. Just as things pop in our head or quotes from the book that we like. Def use the #twooks tag rather than @replies. Maybe set up a time to all get together at once to chat about it at the end. But not make it so that those who cannot attend are excluded from the book club experience. Know what I mean? I don't know a lot about it but have you seen http://twinester.com? idk, just a random thought thrown out there. But I think the #twooks tag should work great. Smile I am enjoying the book so far. And is "twooks" the official name of the book club? ;)

True. I'm reading and responding via my iPhone. Well into the book and can honestly say "good read!" I have a goodreads.com acct., too and know a bookclub can be hosted there, as well. I'm just pleased to have this group motivating me to read for pleasure more often. Not sure I understand or grasp the snipets on Twitter yet, but I'll hang with it and learn.

Maybe we could add another hash for the chapter we're discussing or add the chapter number onto twooks (e.g., #3 or #twooks3 for discussion of chapter 3).  Then we could narrow in on comments for the part of the book we're reading and avoid spoilers from future chapters.

OR keep #twooks for general discussion (like deciding what book to read next) but have a different hash for discussion of a particular book (e.g.,  for The Thirteenth Tale, Chapter 3, use #ttt3).

This is a really good idea, Stephanie. I think this would work really well. I like the idea of #twooks as general discussion and having a separate hashtag for each chapter of each book (#ttt3)

I love the idea of a separate book hashtag, though I would say that separating it by chapter doesn't seem to be working based on the current discussion.  I would vote for having a hashtag for each book, and do a book per month, and then just discuss as people read it.  So everyone can read and discuss at their own pace but the end of the month is a deadline.  However, with separate hashtags for each book, discussion could continue into the next month as well.

I too like the idea of the separate book hashtag - because I don't want anyone to feel rushed in completing the book within a specific time frame; the point here, for me anyway, is just to get back into reading.  That, and sharing ideas, and discovering new books!  Smile  So is the hashtag #ttt okay? I'd hate to miss out on any discussion though, so maybe we hashtag with both? #ttt & #twooks ?  What say yous? (Yes, that is jersey slang for you plural.  AKA y'all.)
